We wrap up the series on the Temptations of Christ today as we take a look at the third temptation that was recorded for us. We are looking at the story from the fourth chapter of the book of Luke. If you will recall, the first temptation was to a basic human need, food. The second was to a basic human nature, greed. In the third and final temptation Satan tries another tactic, the basic human instinct of self-preservation.
The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ -Luke 4: 9-11
Satan takes a play from Jesus and quotes some scripture to him. He quotes what we know as Psalm 91: 11 and 12.
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. -Psalm 91:11,12”
Satan knew that no harm would come to Jesus but once again Jesus throws more scripture at him by quoting Deuteronomy 6:16
Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. -Luke 4:12-13
And with that, Satan left. Knowing he had been beaten. Jesus was stronger than he had thought he would be.
This is an example for us to keep our faith in God to have our backs. Knowing and understanding that He is there for us. It is also an example of why we should spend time in the word. This gives you the knowledge and ammunition you need to battle the spiritual war that we face every single day.
Spend time in the word.
Have faith in Jesus.
Trust in the Lord your God and then...
Press on. Fight the good fight. As a Soldier for Christ.
