10 Commandments - #1

So let me try to set the scene for ya. Moses had led the people and now they were camping at the foot of this large mountain. They were told they were not to touch the mountain or even to approach it or they were to be killed. Stoned. Shot with arrows. No person or animal until they heard a loud trumpet blast.

So they hear the trumpet and Moses leads them out of the camp to the base of the mountain, which by the way is covered in smoke because the Lord had descended on it and was trembling violently. You seeing that? A violently shaking mountain? Scary stuff…

* 1. And God spoke all these words: -Exodus 20:1

* 2. I am the Lord your GOD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

* 3. You shall have no other gods before me.

Now you have to remember that when they were in Egypt they worshiped many different gods. There was a god for just about every aspect of life. So being told now that there was just one TURE God and to server Him and Him only was kind of a hard thing for them to accept. What about the other areas of life? Well we know that God can take care of all of that, if we let him. They had to learn to relay on and depend on and trust in God and God alone. Jesus echo’s this in Matthew 4:10

* Jesus said to him, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” - Matthew 4:10

There are a lot of things in this world to distract us. (START TO LOOK AT PHONE) A lot of things we can give more time and…(FULLY IIN PHONE)

OH! Yeah! This is just one example. There are a lot of things we can give more devotion to than we do God. A lot of things that can become “lower case G gods” to us. The first commandment is a reminder that there is only one true God and that we should worship no other.

Take some time this week and see if there is something you may be giving more time to than you should. We need to make sure we are serving only the one true God and that we have no other gods before him.
