Every year in May we have Mothers day. Every year in June we have Fathers day. Every year in September we have Grandparents day. And it's a good thing to have these days because our parents do so much for us. For starters they are the earthly passage into this world. They bring us up from infants to toddlers to teenagers to young adults before releasing us into the world to make our own way. And we always go back to mom and dad. They are a safe haven for us. A place to return without judgment. A place of unconditional love.
The same goes for our father in Heaven. That is where the 5th commandment comes in.
* And God spoke all these words: -Exodus 20:1
*Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. -Exodus 20:12
And it is a good thing that we do this. To remember the parents that raised us and made us who we are. But at the same time we need not forget our Father in Heaven. He too is worthy of honor and we should do just that. In fact Jesus warns us in Matthew about putting others above him. Even our parents should come second to God. Jesus said…
*Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. -Matthew 10:37
Sorry Mom. I love ya but Jesus and God must come first. Above all else. It may seem harsh but there is plenty of Love to go around. Love for others is part of what this commandment is. To love our mothers and fathers and most importantly our Father in Heaven whom we will be with for eternity in the next life. Another warning Jesus gave us was…
*Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. -John 12:25
So love and honor your Father and mother. But also love and honor your Father in Heaven.
Press on. Fight the good fight. As a Soldier for Christ.
