Give Thanks

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. - Psalms 100:4

Turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, okra, cranberry sauce… What am I missing?

If your family is anything like mine everyone has their favorite dish come Thanksgiving. And because of this, the menu can and often becomes the same items year after year.

Thanksgiving.

Just the word anymore brings to mind a table full of delicious foods that you may have eaten since a young child. The traditional meal cooked and enjoyed year after year becomes so much a part of this time of year that you may lose the since of what the word Thanksgiving is really reminding us of. I know I have been guilty of automatically jumping to a to do list as well as a grocery list that must be completed before the days feast. But do we actually give thanks?

And then there is the fact that sometimes it can be hard for us to be thankful. Some have difficult lives to say the least. Why would they be grateful for that? But who has it better or worse is not the point of the day. It’s a reminder that we should all take stock and be grateful for even the little things in our life.

We are alive, we are clothed and have food, and we are loved. Loved by our family, friends and most of all loved by our LORD and Savior Jesus the Christ. Loved by him so much that he willingly went to the cross so that we could be free.

So, this year, as you sit at the table will all the same foods you eat year after year, be thankful for the tradition, for the food and most importantly for the love. The love of those dear to you, near to you and the love of your Lord. Be thankful and give thanks on Thanksgiving.
